RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". It's a way for you to see updates from your favourite websites in one convenient place, so that you don't have to visit a lot of sites regularly. For example, you can subscribe to New York Times' RSS feed to get the latest headlines, to your best friend's blog for updates on their sordid love life, an interesting thread on a discussion board and "Today's Most Viewed Videos" on YouTube. You can then view them all in your RSS Reader.
There are many readers on the web to choose from, such as the Google Reader or the Yahoo! Reader. Doing a web search for "RSS Reader" will yield many more. You can visit these sites for more information about what readers look like and how they work.
